Which email marketing services work well with Shopify?

You’ve tried a platform or two, something felt off, and now you’re not sure whether the problem is the tool or your setup. The email marketing services that get recommended everywhere don’t all behave the same way once they’re connected to your Shopify store.

Short answer: Klaviyo retention agency is the strongest fit for most Shopify DTC brands doing $500K or more. Omnisend retention services is a genuine alternative if you want simpler pricing. Brevo retention services works if your list is large and your flows are light. Attentive is the right call when SMS is your primary channel. The right choice depends on where your revenue is actually leaking.

Why the platform choice matters more than most posts admit

Native Shopify data sync is not the same across tools

Klaviyo pulls Shopify order data through a native integration that syncs in real time using Shopify’s web pixel. That means your Placed Order, Started Checkout, and Viewed Product events are available as flow triggers the moment they fire, with full line-item detail including product titles, SKUs, prices, and collection membership. Omnisend has a comparable native sync. Brevo does not. Brevo’s Shopify connector as of 2026 still relies on a webhook-based sync that can lag by several minutes and does not pass collection-level data by default, which limits segmentation depth.

We see this cause real problems in roughly a third of the accounts we audit. The brand thinks they have a working abandoned cart flow, but the trigger is firing on a delayed or incomplete event, and the first email goes out 40 minutes after abandonment instead of 15. That gap costs conversions.

Segmentation depth determines repeat purchase rate, not open rate

The email marketing services that move repeat purchase rate share one trait: they let you build segments from predictive and behavioral data, not just list membership. Klaviyo’s predictive analytics include predicted next order date, expected lifetime value, and churn risk, all built from your Shopify order history. Omnisend offers RFM-based segmentation. Brevo offers contact property filters but no predictive layer. If your primary goal is getting a second and third purchase out of existing customers, the depth of the segmentation engine matters more than the email editor.

SMS integration is an afterthought in most platforms

Attentive is the only platform on this list built SMS-first. Its two-tap opt-in, compliance tooling, and conversational SMS features are ahead of what Klaviyo SMS offers, though Klaviyo SMS has closed the gap considerably since 2024. If SMS will drive more than 20% of your attributed retention revenue, Attentive plus a lightweight ESP like Brevo is a defensible stack. If SMS is secondary, Klaviyo handles both well enough that running two platforms creates more workflow problems than it solves.

How to set up whichever platform you choose correctly

  1. Klaviyo: In your Klaviyo account, go to Integrations > Catalog > Shopify. Enter your Shopify store URL and click Connect. Once connected, go to Integrations > Shopify > Settings and confirm that “Sync historical data” is enabled and set to at least 2 years. Then go to Flows > Create Flow > Browse Ideas and install the Abandoned Checkout flow. Open the first email in that flow, click Delivery Options, and confirm Smart Sending is turned off for the first email only. Smart Sending suppresses contacts who received any email in the prior 16 hours by default, and on a checkout flow that will suppress your most active buyers.
  2. Omnisend: Go to Store Settings > Integrations > Shopify and authorize the connection. Then go to Audience > Segments and build your first segment using Order activity > Has placed order, set the count to exactly 1, and save it. This is your new customer segment, and it is the base for your post-purchase flow. In Automations > Pre-built Workflows, install “Post-purchase” and set the first email delay to 2 hours after Placed Order.
  3. Brevo: Install the Brevo plugin from the Shopify App Store, not the native webhook method. The plugin maintains a more reliable sync. Once installed, go to Contacts > Segments in Brevo and confirm that order count attributes are populating before you build any flows. If the attribute column is empty 24 hours after install, re-authorize the connection from the Shopify App Store plugin page.
  4. Attentive: Connect via Attentive’s Shopify integration under Settings > Integrations in your Attentive dashboard. Enable the “Shopify Purchase” and “Shopify Cart Abandonment” event feeds. Then in Journeys, confirm your abandoned cart journey uses the Shopify Cart Abandonment trigger, not a custom event, or the timing will be unreliable.
  5. Regardless of platform: go to Shopify Admin > Settings > Notifications and disable the default Shopify abandoned checkout email. If you leave it on, your customers receive both Shopify’s email and your flow email, which is the fastest way to get an unsubscribe.

Questions we hear from operators every week

How does a digital marketing agency work with these platforms?

Most retention agencies, including ours, connect to your Klaviyo account as an added user on your own account, which gives access without sharing your login credentials. The agency builds and manages flows, segments, and campaigns inside your account. You retain full ownership of the account and the data when the engagement ends. This is different from email platforms that lock data behind proprietary exports.

Why does this happen in the first place?

Most Shopify brands pick an email platform based on a recommendation from a founder community or a low introductory price, then discover months later that the sync is incomplete or the segmentation is too shallow to do anything useful. The platform was not wrong for every brand, it was wrong for that brand’s specific revenue structure and flow complexity. That mismatch is the root cause almost every time.

How do you fix email marketing services that aren’t performing?

Start with a flow audit before you consider switching platforms. In Klaviyo, go to Flows, sort by Revenue, and look at your top five flows. Check whether Smart Sending is suppressing contacts in your first-touch emails. Check whether your Placed Order trigger is filtering out repeat buyers. In our experience, 60% of underperforming flow revenue is recoverable within the current platform without migrating anywhere.

How long should it take to see a change?

If you fix a flow trigger or remove an incorrect Smart Sending setting, you should see the corrected behavior within 24 hours, because flows are forward-looking. Revenue impact from a fixed abandoned checkout flow is visible within 7 to 14 days in Klaviyo’s Flow Analytics. A full platform migration takes 4 to 6 weeks to stabilize, including historical data sync, segment rebuilds, and deliverability warmup on the new sending domain.

The edge case most posts skip: if you migrate from Klaviyo to any other platform, your predictive analytics reset to zero because they are built from sending history inside Klaviyo, not from Shopify order data alone. Budget 90 days for those models to rebuild before you compare performance fairly.

Pick the platform that matches how your revenue is actually structured, set up the Shopify connection correctly from day one, and turn off Shopify’s native abandoned checkout email immediately.
