Retention control
Managing which customers you keep, and then keeping them. In ecommerce it means controlling how many first-time buyers come back, how soon they come back and how often.
It is measured with three numbers: customer retention rate, repeat purchase rate and time to second order. The levers that move them are most of the other terms on this page: flows, segments, offers, loyalty and service.
Examples
- A post-purchase flow timed to land just before most customers would place their second order.
- A win-back offer for customers who have gone past their usual gap between orders.
- A replenishment reminder set from how long each product actually lasts.
- A sunset flow that stops mailing people who never open, so the inbox keeps trusting your sends.
Other meanings
Outside ecommerce the term means something else. The US Army uses retention control points to cap how long a soldier may serve at a rank. In records management, retention controls set how long documents are kept. In paper mills, retention control keeps fibres and filler on the machine wire.
Retention Control, with capitals, is also the name of the agency that publishes this glossary: a retention-only agency for Shopify and DTC brands.
